An award winning perennial, the 1-2 inch wide flowers of Mardi Gras Helenium open to yellow and orange petals highlighted by deep reds that surround a small chestnut colored cone. As the long lasting flowers mature the reds and oranges intensify. An easy to grow and pest resistant perennial that provides a riot of spring and summer color on sturdy, upright plants. Attracts butterflies and other pollinators and makes a long lasting cut flower as well.
Heleniums or Sneezeweeds are North American native perennials of which Mardi Gras is likely a hybrid selection that was discovered in England and then brought back to the US for our enjoyment. Pinching back in spring will produce fuller, more floriferous plants. Heleniums should be cut back after flowering. Full sun and moist soils are preferred for best performance.
